Texas State Racks Up 3 More Weekly Sunbelt Accolades

Huskey named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week, DeWalt again snatches Setter/Freshman combo.

NEW ORLEANS – Cheyenne Huskey and Emily DeWalt were both honored as Sun Belt Conference weekly award winners, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Huskey, a junior outside hitter from Columbus, Texas, was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week. DeWalt, a native of Helotes, Texas, earned the Sun Belt Setter of the Week and Freshman of the Week combo for the second time this season.

The duo helped lead the Bobcats to the only 4-0 week in the Sun Belt. The maroon and gold registered a midweek road sweep over rival UTSA before dropping just one set all weekend to win the 2018 Sparky Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

The Bobcats defeated Gonzaga (3-0), Northern Arizona (3-1) and host Arizona State (3-0) across the two-day span. DeWalt picked up her second tournament MVP accolade, while Huskey also landed on the all-tournament team.

Texas State has now captured two non-conference tournament trophies for the first time since 1998 after also winning the 2018 Creeds & Crests Classic two weeks ago.

Huskey registered 56 kills (4.67/set) and just 11 errors on 91 swings for a blistering .495 hitting clip. She added 32 digs (2.67/set), seven aces, seven blocks and three assists.

She began her week by recording 21 kills in the victory over UTSA. She then posted 15 digs, 13 kills and five aces against NAU before tallying 14 kills and just one error on 18 swings (.722) against the Sun Devils.

The honor is the first of her career.

DeWalt finished her week with 157 assists (12.08/set), 33 digs (2.54/set), 11 kills (0.85/set), four service aces and two blocks. She also hit .409 after registering 11 kills and just a pair of errors on 22 attacks.

The rookie posted 41 assists and eight digs against the Roadrunners before tallying 32 assists and 11 digs against the Bulldogs. She followed with a 46-assist, nine-dig effort against the Lumberjacks before finishing with 38 assists against the Sun Devils.

Texas State has a stranglehold on weekly accolades so far this season. The maroon and gold have won seven of the 17 awards handed out by the conference this season. The next closest school has just three.

DeWalt alone has now collected four, as she was named both Setter of the Week and Freshman of the Week on Sept. 3. Seniors Madison Daigle (Defensive, Sept. 3) and Amy Pflughaupt (Offensive, Sept. 10) also have weekly plaudits in 2018.

The Bobcats (9-5) are now set to open league action on the road this week. First up for the maroon and gold will be a 6:30 p.m. match Sept. 21 against ULM in Monroe, La.
