Texas State University System (TSUS) and Texas State University officials are requesting qualifications from companies to act as construction manager-at-risk to oversee a $5.8 million project to renovate the library on the San Marcos campus.

The proposal is asking for design services in addition to managing the project to repurpose 175,189 square feet of space located on four levels of the existing 25-year-old library to provide services using technology, adaptable furnishing and equipment that supports education and research activities. The updated library is to be called the Albert B. Alkek Library Learning Commons.

The existing library recently had an infrastructure upgrade which included increasing capacity for electrical and data in addition to adding a raised access floor on the second floor to support the Learning Commons area.

That space will offer computer stations with options for using computers owned by the library or privately owned, build printing kiosks near computer areas, provide a cafe to provide snacks, drinks and small meals as well as seating space for eating both inside and outside the library.

The new space also will feature classroom space, areas to display art and space for meetings and gatherings using available niches and alcoves as well as numerous study spaces. Deadline for submitting proposals is June 12.
