SAN MARCOS, Texas – The long road trip to start the season continues this weekend for the Texas State soccer team with matches at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday and Prairie View A&M on Sunday. Friday’s contest kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Dugan Soccer Complex, and Sunday’s match begins at 1 p.m. at the PVAMU Soccer Field.
Entering the weekend, the Bobcats are 1-3-0 on the season. The Islanders are 0-2-0, and the Panthers sport a 1-2-0 record.
TXST is coming off losses to LSU and McNeese last weekend. Renny Moore scored the lone goal for the Bobcats against the Cowgirls. Assisting on the score was Jordan Kondikoff.
Leading the team with two goals is Kaylee Davis. Along with Kondikoff, both Haley Groff and Genesis Turman have been credited with an assist.
In goal, Heather Martin has made a team-high 18 saves and sports a .857 save percentage. She also has a 1.20 GAA heading into this weekend’s matches. Kathryn Budde sports a 1.83 GAA and .700 save percentage with seven stops.
Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi opened its season last weekend with two 2-0 losses, one at Colorado College and the other in the home opener against Rice. Friday is the second of four consecutive home matches for the Islanders. They were picked to finish eighth in the Southland Conference preseason poll.
Abby Deakin, Madeline Lozano and Siri O’Donnell pace the team with two shots apiece.
Kyleigh Hall has started both matches between the posts. She comes into the match with a 2.00 GAA, 11 saves and .733 save percentage.
Series vs. Islanders
Texas State leads the all-time series 2-1 over TAMUCC. The Bobcats won the first two meetings before the Islanders took a 2-1 contest last season in San Marcos. The last win for TXST in the series came on Oct. 14, 2015, by the score of 3-1, the only other time the teams have met in Corpus Christi.
Scouting Prairie View A&M
Prairie View A&M is coming off a 1-0 overtime victory over Nicholls on Sunday. The Panthers opened the season with a 1-0 loss at home to McNeese and dropped a 5-0 decision last Friday at Houston.
In the Southwestern Athletic Conference preseason poll, PVAMU was picked to finish fifth in the 11-team league. Before facing Texas State, Houston Baptist comes to town on Friday.
Scoring the lone goal of the season for the Panthers is Jojo Bernal. She has also taken three shots with all of them being on goal. Leading the team with five shots and four on goal is Gina Zavala de Rojas.
Quinn Josiah has played every minute in goal for PVAMU. She enters the weekend with a 1.97 GAA, 35 saves and a .854 save percentage.
Series vs. Panthers
All 11 meetings between Texas State and Prairie View A&M has gone in favor of the Bobcats. Last season saw TXST win 4-0 at home in the team’s second annual Teal Match with two goals from Moore.
The Bobcats have yet to allow a goal to the Panthers, the second longest active streak in the nation. Sunday will be the first meeting in Prairie View since the first meeting on Sept. 11, 2005. That day saw Texas State come away with a 9-0 win, the largest margin of victory in the series.
