Texas State Spring Courses Open To 50-Plus Public
The community is invited to attend any of eight courses this spring sponsored by the Retired Faculty and Staff Association (RFSA) at Texas State University and University Federal Credit Union (UFCU). The special interest courses for adults aged 50-plus in this pilot program meet once or twice a week from four to eight weeks at a variety of times and locations around San Marcos. Most are taught by Texas State current and retired faculty and staff, and all are free of charge.
The courses are a partnership of RFSA, UFCU, the San Marcos Public Library, San Marcos Parks and Recreation’s 50-Plus Program and the Cheatham Street Music Foundation. The Courses
- Country Western Dancing – Former Fine Arts and Communication Dean Richard Cheatham coaches this class 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays for eight weeks beginning Feb. 3 at the Cheatham Street Warehouse.
- Texas Authors and Literature: 1542 to the Present – Steve Davis, curator of the Southwestern Writers Collection at Texas State and a celebrated author himself, teaches this course 7-8:30 p.m. Thursdays for six weeks beginning Feb. 5 at the San Marcos Public Library.
- How To Look at and Understand Great Art: Part II – Becky Duval Reese, former director of the University of Texas’ Huntington Art Gallery (now the Blanton Museum) and the El Paso Museum of Art, continues a popular course she began last semester that will explore perspective, texture, light, time and motion in art. Classes meet 10:30-11:45 a.m. Thursdays for six weeks beginning Feb. 5 at the San Marcos Public Library. Part I is not a prerequisite for this course.
- Writing Your Life Story – Liz Stephens, founder of the Central Texas Writing Project, helps students find and record their personal stories. Classes meet 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays for six weeks beginning Feb. 3 at the San Marcos First United Methodist Church, Room 129.
- How To Better Use Your iPhone and iPad – Kevin Huffaker, director of classroom technologies at Texas State, will lead this practical course noon-1:30 p.m. Mondays for six weeks beginning Feb. 2 at the Price Center.
- Financial Issues for Boomers Plus – Clint Campbell of the University Federal Credit Union facilitates this course that includes Social Security planning, estate planning and long-term care needs. Classes meet 6-7:30 p.m. Mondays for four weeks beginning Feb. 2 at the Price Center.
- Conversational Spanish – Experienced bilingual teacher Seth Worley coaches this interactive class 4-5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays for four weeks beginning Feb. 2 at Tres Hermanas Restaurant.
- Introduction to Graphite Techniques in Drawing – Illustrator Roxana Tuff, who taught studio art at Texas State for 14 years, helps students develop their drawing skills 10 a.m.-noon Fridays for six weeks beginning Feb. 6 at the San Marcos Activity Center’s Multi-Purpose Room.
