Texas State Tight End Nominated For 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

SAN MARCOS, Texas Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced that Texas State’s senior tight end Gabe Schrade is a nominee for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football.

Schrade is one of 146 student-athletes nominated for this year’s award that embodies the true spirit of teamwork and selflessness while donating their limited free time to helping and serving others.

Schrade was one of three Texas State students to earn the inaugural LBJ Civic Leadership Award last spring after serving as a Senator At-Large in the Texas State University Student Government, as the president for the Texas State Fellowship of Christian Athletes and as a football team captain.

Some of his community service efforts included helping organize and lead a Valentine’s Day Dance for the sick and elderly at the San Marcos Rehabilitation Center.

He also assisted with a San Marcos River Rehabilitation project, beautifying the gardens and landscape around the San Marcos Visitor’s Center and helping to clean up Goodnight Middle School.

In addition he organized and led a group of teammates to perform nightly janitorial duties at Strahan Coliseum so that the full-time employees could go home early for a night.

As a Texas State Student Senator, he was influential in writing, sponsoring and voting on legislation that initiated Student Government actions to create safety applications to combat on-campus robberies and sexual assaults.

They also formed Bobcats United, a dialogue series that broadened students’ understanding and opened lines of communication with representatives from different sides of cultural and confrontational topics.

A preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection by Lindy’s Sports, Schrade is on the John Mackey Award watch list after catching 25 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns in his first season as a full-time starting tight end in 2016.

A native of DeLand, Florida, Schrade earned an Oak Farms Dairy “Cream of the Crop” academic award in 2017 and an Academic Achievement award in 2014. He also was on the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List in 2013-14 after maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Since 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has brought together a select group of college football players from across the country to honor their dedication to volunteerism and enriching the lives of others.

While players are often recognized for their accomplishments and achievements on game day, these student-athletes have made significant contributions to the greater good of society, inspiring future generations of young athletes and the larger college football community.
