Texas State UPD Arrests San Marcos Man Caught Watching Women Sleep

A San Marcos man is behind bars after breaking into and stealing items in several dorm rooms where Texas State University Police say female students were sleeping.

According to Texas State University, Jose Ernesto Chavez (07/24/1989) entered San Jacinto Hall early Friday morning where he then entered several unlocked rooms where female students were sleeping. Victims contacted University police. UPD officers quickly responded to the calls and apprehended Chavez as he was leaving San Jacinto Hall.

Police say Chavez took items from several rooms, which were later recovered.

San Marcos Police Department dispatch was alerted early Friday morning of UPD’s arrest and notified detectives that the suspect’s description was similar to that of the suspect of recent burglaries.

During questioning with the San Marcos Police Department, Chavez confessed to a previous incident that happened on Sunday, April 21, at Dakota Ranch Apartments (1818 Old Ranch Road 12) where a victim tells police she woke up to an unknown man in her bedroom, on her bed and grabbing her breast.

He has also confessed to a burglary at The Edge Apartments (1740 Old Ranch Road 12), which occurred on Sunday, April 21 as well.

Chavez has been charged with one count of burglary of a habitation with intent to commit a sexual offense, one count of burglary of a habituation felony one, and three counts of burglary of habitation felony two. Chavez remains in the Hays County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
