In the second annual Delta Zeta Classic, the Texas State Bobcats volleyball team went .500, 2-2, in San Marcos.
The first set of games played at Strahan Coliseum on Friday started with the Bobcats falling in five sets to Wichita State. The first two sets were tight, with a 26-24 first set win to the Shockers and a 31-29 second set win for TXST. After the first intermission, TXST took the third set, 25-22, but lost the next two sets, 25-19 in the fourth and 15-9 in the fifth set.
Freshman middle back Lauren Kirch lead the Bobcats with 19.5 points, 17 kills and a team high hitting percentage of .333. Sierra Smith led the team in digs with 27 on the match.
The final game on Friday night Texas State faced I-35 rival UTSA and won in four sets, 3-1.
The Bobcats and Roadrunners split the first two sets with Texas State winning the first set in a tight 26-24 victory and the Roadrunners taking set number two 25-19. The Bobcats went on to win the final two sets, 25-18 and 25-23 to win the match.
The Bobcats were led offensively by outside hitters Kelsey Weynand and Alex Simms. Weynand lead the team with 18 points and 17 kills, while Simms finished with 15 points and 12 kills.
On the second day of the Delta Zeta Classic, the Bobcats took on Abilene Christian and picked up their first three-set sweep of the season. The first set was competitive, a 25-21 Bobcat victory that had 14 ties and six lead changes. TXST then won a closely battled second set ,26-24, and won the match with a 25-18 third set win.
Junior outside hitter Brooke Smith had an effective game scoring 11.5 points and tallied nine kills while leading the team in hitting percentage with a .500 mark. Setter Jordan Moore had a game high 35 assists.
The final game of the tournament pitted the Bobcats against North Texas. The 5-1 Mean Green added another victory to their record by sweeping Texas State in three sets. Despite being swept, Texas State battled hard the whole game scoring 20 points in all three sets of the match, 25-23 in the first set, 26-24 in both the second and third sets.
There were a total of 17 ties and five lead changes in the match. Three Bobcats scored double figures in points in Brooke Smith, Lauren Kirch and Kelsey Weynand.
