Texas State Women’s Soccer Falls Late at Troy

TROY, Ala. – The Bobcats scored less than 20 minutes into the game but fell 2-1 to Troy at the Troy Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon after the Trojans netted two goals in the second half.

The Bobcats drop to 6-9-2 on the year and 3-5-1 in the Sun Belt Conference while Troy is now 7-7-3 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play. Following today’s other matches, Texas State is now in a three-way tie for seventh in the standings with Georgia State and UL Monroe.

Early in the 17th minute, Kira Zapalac sent in a corner kick from the left side of the field. Genesis Turman was able to get her head on the ball and flick it towards the back half of the goal to put Texas State ahead 1-0. It was the first career goal in Turman’s collegiate career.

The Trojans tied the game in the 60th minute off a corner kick. Alex Huynh sent in the corner that bounced around and eventually into the goal by Nicole Strahl.

Halfway through the 81st minute the Trojans sent a cross into the penalty box. Troy’s Abby Reynolds slightly overran the ball, turned her body and the ball hit off her arm. The ref appeared to blow his whistle for the apparent handball but bailed Reynolds out by calling Turman for pushing her from behind and awarding the Trojans a penalty kick. Reynolds then knocked the ball into the right corner of the net to give Troy a 2-1 advantage.

The best chance for the Bobcats to tie the game came with just under five minutes to play. Jordan Kondikoff attempted a shot from 25 yards out that just went over the crossbar by inches.

Pacing Texas State with two shots apiece was Kondikoff and Prater. Zapalac’s assist on the Bobcats’ goal was her second of the season and third of her career.

In goal, Heather Martin made five saves to give her 61 this season. Her save total places her ninth on the program’s career list and is one shy of tying Amanda Byrd (2007) for the 10th most in a single-season.

The regular season finale and Senior Day for the Bobcats is Sunday, October 23 at 1 p.m. against UL Monroe at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
