Texas State’s Halee Brewer Earns National Accolade

Bobcat senior middle blocker selected as PrepVolleyball.com Unsung Hero of the Week.

CULVER CITY, Calif. – Halee Brewer was honored Wednesday as the PrepVolleyball.com National Unsung Hero of the Week.

The senior middle blocker earned the recognition after stepping into a huge role for the Texas State volleyball team this past weekend. After not having seen the floor since Sept. 14 (eight matches), the Longview, Texas, native was called upon in the fourth set against Georgia Southern to aid with a struggling Bobcat block.

She stepped up and made an immediate impact, recording three blocks in the first five points and creating a spark that lifted the maroon and gold to the 3-1 triumph over the Eagles. Brewer put an exclamation mark on the victory by recording her career-high fourth block on the final point of the match.

She was rewarded for her performance with a start the following night against Georgia State. Not only did she tie her career high with a team-leading four blocks, but she added her first kill of the season in a sweep over the Panthers.

“Halee is the ideal example of what this award was created for,” TXST associate head coach Tracy Smith said. “She played her first two conference matches of the year and really saved the day for us. She ended up as our highest block leader now at 2.0 blocks per set.

She is the lifeline of our team and does all the little things behind the scenes to help the team’s overall success. We would not be where we are today without Halee.”

The Bobcats entered the weekend ranked No. 11 in the Sunbelt Conference in blocks, and the maroon and gold vaulted all the way into fourth thanks in large part to Brewer’s defensive efforts. Texas State had a season-high 14 blocks against Georgia Southern and tallied seven against Georgia State.

Brewer is the third Bobcat to receive a national award this season, joining junior Cheyenne Huskey and freshman Emily DeWalt. Huskey was selected as a VolleyMob.com National Player of the Week Honorable Mention (Sept. 18). DeWalt was the first player in school history to be named the AVCA National Player of the Week (Oct. 2).

She has also been named the PrepVolleyball.com Non-Power 5 National Freshman of the Week (Sept. 19), a VolleyMob.com National Player of the Week Honorable Mention (Oct. 2) and a VolleyMob.com National Player of the Week Other Notable (Sept. 4, Sept. 25).

Texas State (16-5, 7-0 Sun Belt) has won its last 11 matches, which is the longest win streak since 2011. The Bobcats will put their streak on the line when they play host to the top teams from the Sun Belt East Division in Appalachian State (13-5, 5-1) and powerhouse Coastal Carolina (6-7, 5-0).

TXST is set to entertain the Mountaineers at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12, with the match against the Chanticleers slated for a 6:30 p.m. start Oct. 13. Both contests will be held inside Strahan Arena.
