The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded Texas a little more than $5 billion in disaster funding to aid in recovery from Hurricane Harvey and previous flooding events.
Funding comes from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG-DR) program to rebuild housing, businesses and infrastructure. The new funding is in addition to the $5 billion previously awarded to the state by HUD last year.
The CDBG-DR funds will provide $652,175,000 to assist in rebuilding damaged homes, businesses and infrastructure and $4,297,189,000 will be used for elevating homes, buying flooded properties and improving structures from wind and water.
In addition, Houston will receive $61,884,000 and San Marcos also will receive $24,012,000 for mitigation of flooding that occurred in 2015. The announcement of the new funding will allow local officials in Texas to implement a disaster recovery plan to identify needs in their communities for these funds.
