Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.
The Job Corps program is authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (supersedes WIA 1998). For more information about the Job Corps program at a national level, please visit their Official Public Web Site.
Matthew Gale, Deputy Center Director of the Gary Job Corps Center becomes an Honorary Texan.
Governor Greg Abbotts signed a certificate stating “To all to whom these presents shall come, Greetings: Know ye that Matthew Ryan Gale is hereby commissioned an Honorary Texan under the laws of the State of Texas with all rights, privileges, and emoluments appertaining to said office. In testimony whereof, I have signed my name and caused the Seal of the State of Texas to be affixed at the City of Austin, this, the 7th day of June 2019.”
Mr. Gale was excited to receive this honor. Congratulations Mr. Gale and welcome to Texas!
Constructing Picnic Tables
Welding students Charly Sosa and Louis Ramirez have been creating the metal structures of the Gary Job Corps Center’s new picnic tables.
The students took the frame of one of the old picnic tables to use as a template but then improved on the design to make it more sturdy and pleasing to the eyes. Once the students are complete with the structures, they are being given to the carpentry trade to place seats and table tops.
Mark Butzirus, welding instructor said that Charly, the main welder on the project has been doing a fantastic job and plans on applying for an advanced welding trade.
Students Receive Their M.A.J.A.C
Gary Job Corps Center’s graduates, Jazmyne Bledsoe and Freddy Milne received their M.A.J.A.C. (Military, Apprenticeship, Job, Advanced Trade, or College) this week. M.A.J.A.C. is a Job Corps initiative where the goal of every graduate is to be successfully placed.
Freddy and Jazmyne received full-time jobs at Epic Piping in San Marcos, TX. Graduates Jazmyne and Freddy are pictured in front of their new apartment showing-off their award for M.A.J.A.C.
The Gary Job Corps Center’s Corrections trade students volunteered their time at the 25th Annual Juneteenth Charity BBQ Cook-off by performing security and crowd control. The main “cook-off” took place on Saturday which included categories of chicken, ribs, cook’s choice, cobbler, and brisket.
This year’s events included a cake auction, parade through the center of downtown, a car show, a barbeque cook-off, musical entertainment, as well as food, fun, games and activities for the kids. These events were for the entire San Marcos community with proceeds going to organizations such as the Hays County Youth Livestock Show, Citizens in Need, Calaboose African American History Museum, San Marcos High School, and other charitable programs.
