Three-Peat For Bobcat Women And Men Place Third In Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Texas State women’s track and field team won its third consecutive Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship title after racking up 128 points at the Crossplex.

The men concluded the meet with a third-place finish after garnering 119 total points. All-in-all, the Bobcats crowned four individual champions across six events, set five new school records, and totaled 21 all-conference selections.

“We faced a variety of adversities this weekend,” said head coach Jody Stewart. “We left a lot of points out there, but we are proud of how our student-athletes competed to the end. We will continue to adjust as we progress in the spring and we look forward to having a better meet outdoors. We would like to give special thanks to our administration and fans for their continued support.”

Freshman Leslie Romero won the first gold medal for the Bobcats on day one in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:40.57, topping her own school record that she set earlier this year. She then dominated the competition on day two in the 5000-meter run and claimed her second gold medal after stopping the clock at 17.06.00, another school record.

Day two began with junior Ben Collerton winning his second consecutive gold medal in the men’s heptathlon and rewrote both the Sun Belt Conference and Texas State record book by accumulating 5,379 points. The mark breaks his own record of 5,115 points set a year ago.

Senior Tramesha Hardy turned in a big day on the track, scoring 30 points to win the Top Scoring Performer award for the third time in as many years. Hardy started the day with a 55.14 time in the 400-meter dash, claiming her third consecutive Sun Belt Championship title in the event.

The time is also ranked No. 8 in program history. Later in the meet, Hardy breezed her way to her fourth straight 200-meter dash title by breaking the school record with a 23.51 time.

The Houston, Texas native also placed second in the 60-meter dash, clocking out at 7.46 seconds (No. 7 in school’s record book).

Senior T’Mond Johnson claimed the fourth championship for the Bobcats and moved to No. 2 in the school’s record book with a 19.01-meter launch (62-4.50) in the men’s shot put. Johnson has won the individual title in the event three consecutive years.

Other Notable

The unit comprised of freshman Sydney Cole, sophomore Javlyn Cameron, sophomore Tina Sierra, and Romero set a new school record in the women’s distance medley with a time of 11:49.95 which placed second in the championship meet.
