By Erin O’Donnell

Long and sunny days are here, and vacations and beach trips are on the horizon.

For some, classes and work are still on the schedule for this summer.

While summer should be fun and exciting, you should not have to spend a lot to have a great time. If you’re in San Marcos this summer, here is a list of some of the best events the city has to offer for free.

  1. Art Squared

This art market happens every second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Square.

The event can introduce guests to the wonderful culture of San Marcos, and allow them to enjoy beautiful artwork from local artists.

Enjoy live music from local musicians while browsing paintings, sculptures, jewelry and crafts.

2. Movies in your Park

Relive your childhood this summer every Tuesday from June 9 to July 28.

Movies in your Park will be held at San Marcos Plaza Park. Showings throughout the summer will be a mix of new and classic family films, along with some animated favorites.

Some of the scheduled films are  Annie, Aladdin and Cinderella.

3. Summer in the Park

Every Thursday from June 2 to Aug. 11, Summer in the Park is another free event to enjoy in San Marcos.

This free summer concert series showcases local musicians. The 2016 event will feature Soul Track Mind, Brave Combo, Shelley King and Midnight River Choir.

With a broad range of musical diversity, there is bound to be a show you will enjoy.

4. Juneteenth Celebrations

From June 18-19, celebrate an important part of American history at the San Marcos Plaza Park.

This is the oldest-known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

The celebration will include a parade through downtown San Marcos as well as a charity BBQ cook-off.

5. SummerFest

This free Fourth of July party is sure to brighten up your spirits while celebrating Independence Day.

Starting at 6 p.m., the celebration will feature live music, a children’s parade, a patriotic costume contest and a grand finale firework display.

6. Spending the day at Sewell Park

An oldie, but a goodie.

Nothing shouts summer like spending a day floating the San Marcos River.

If floating is not your thing, you can work on your summer glow while basking in the sun, playing a game of sand volleyball or throwing a Frisbee with friends.

The possibilities are endless at Sewell.
