Torchy’s Taco’s Celebrated San Marcos Opening

BY: Brittany Baig

Renovation of the former downtown post office has officially come to a close this week with the opening of San Marcos’ first Torchy’s Tacos.

The Torchy’s opening was officially on Tuesday the 17th but the popular restaurant chain hosted a “soft opening” on Monday, February 16th for a public preview event. The event, ran until 9 PM, offered two tacos and two drinks of choice, as well as all-you-can-eat Green Chile Queso to all who attended.

In January 2013 the USPS announced their intentions to relocate to their newly built Stagecoach facility, which also included plans to sell this piece of prime downtown property.

What was once considered by many San Marcos residents an “eyesore”, has now become the home of many business like Torchy’s Tacos and others including Jersey Mike’s, Sports Clips, and MedSpring Urgent Care. Renovations of the former post office began promptly after the purchase of Guadalupe Station on December 2013.

According to the Weitzman Group’s press report a fun, exciting energy was envisioned for the site from the start.

“From the start, the goal has been to create a lively, exciting and architecturally pleasing infill and multi-tenant retail center within blocks of Texas State University,” says Casey Kopecky with the Commercial Retail Division of The Weitzman Group’s press report.

Jersey Mike’s also celebrated its’ grand opening on Wednesday, and they will be open from 10 AM to 9 PM, while Sport Clips is also open for business.

On the opposite corner of Torchy’s, MedSpring Urgent Care has also opened. With doctors on-site from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily, including Saturdays and Sundays, the new MedSpring clinic is offering treatment for routine illnesses and injuries from colds and coughs to cuts and broken bones. On-site lab tests, X-rays, vaccines and physicals will also available, along with occupational health services.

The new MedSpring Urgent Care will create an additional health care option for residents of San Marcos, which, according to the latest U.S. census data, is the nation’s fastest growing city, boasting an 8 percent annual growth rate.

“It’s important for a city with such a fast-growing population to have access to quality, convenient health care, which is exactly what the new MedSpring will provide,” said MedSpring’s Chief Medical Officer Jon L. Belsher, M.D. “After serving patients across the Austin area since 2011, we’re excited to expand further south into San Marcos.”

Another new feature of the Guadalupe Station site is the parking addition. During the site’s days as a post office, parking was limited to street parking. Now customers are welcome to park behind this new shiny block of convenient eateries and retail.
