Traffic Alert: I35 At Slaughter Creek Closing For Bridge Demolition

AUSTIN —The Texas Department of Transportation will close Interstate 35 at the Slaughter Creek overpass during the first weekend of June to demolish the old bridge and prepare for replacement, weather permitting.

The mainlanes will be closed and traffic detoured to the frontage roads in both directions at exit 226 while crews demolish the bridge. During the closure, drivers can cross I-35 at either Onion Creek Parkway or Slaughter Lane. The closure will run from 11 p.m. until 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, June 3 and 4.

The Slaughter Creek overpass will not be accessible for about a year, while a new, wider bridge is built, including a south-to-northbound turnaround. During construction, the signals will be removed so drivers will not have to stop at this location. The project will improve mobility and enhance safety along I-35. Work also includes widening the southbound I-35 frontage road to two lanes through the Slaughter Creek intersection, as well as installing safety lighting from Slaughter Lane to Onion Creek Parkway.

Capital Excavation will carry out the $9.2 million project replacing the nearly 60-year old structure.

Road signs have been placed alerting drivers of the closure. Motorists should consider alternate routes or allow extra time to travel through this area during the affected hours, as heavy delays are expected. TxDOT asks the traveling public to be patient and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.
