Traffic Alert: Kyle’s Top Road Construction Projects

1`Staff Report

Last week Kyle started the long-awaited reconstruction of Lehman Road. Kyle residents should be prepared for detours during the roadwork.

Please remember to support your local businesses as they are still open during construction.

Underground utilities will kickoff this reconstruction project, with an estimated project wrap up the timeline of 24 months and the closed portion of FM 150 to Masonwood to last several months.

However, inclement weather and other issues can affect the anticipated schedule throughout the entire project.

Motorists should be prepared for detours and closures during the construction period. The contractor is required to display signage in advance of traffic changes, lane shifts, detours and closures.

UPDATED October 25, 2019

For updates on current road closures and detours due to construction, please click here.

Burleson St.: Began Construction September 2018 (approximately 24-month project)

The section of Burleson St. between Lockhart and St. Anthony’s is open again; workers may still be present. There’s still some minor work to be done and the sidewalks and other elements aren’t quite ready, but the barricades were removed so you can drive on that section of road. Please be alert and watch for construction personnel in the work zone.

**The roadway north of Schlemmer is not safe for walkers; as soon as it is we will notify the public.**

In related news, work continues moving north. Traffic is now detoured from Burleson to Spring Branch, rather than Bellaire. The utility crew will continue to close small areas, block by block, as they work north toward the railroad tracks.

IMPORTANT: Union Pacific Railroad will have at least two upcoming closings of the rail crossing at Burleson St. near Marketplace. The first has been tentatively scheduled for Nov. 14.

The work on 11/14/19 is expected to last one day. Please follow posted detour signs.

We will update this webpage and use social media to share information about this and any future railroad crossing closings.

Some minor disruptions to traffic in the coming weeks may be needed as we still have some pending work (illumination, landscaping). We will use social media to communicate any issue/temporary closures if needed.

Details about this project: This is a planned major reconstruction of the road and part of the 2013 road bond approved by Kyle voters. The work involves moving utilities and adding turn lanes. The overall project, which began Sept. 10, 2018, is anticipated to last a total of about 24 months.

**Note: as work moves north toward Marketplace, the contractor will set new detours. We will work to keep everyone updated.**

Lehman Rd.: Began Construction February 2019 (approximately 24-month project)

The Lehman Rd. closure now extends from FM 150 to just south of Hiver St.

Remember, you can still easily get to the businesses at Lehman & FM 150 by entering from the 150 side of the plaza.

The contractor is focusing on the section from FM 150 to Masonwood. As the work progresses, the city will provide an update of new closures and section openings.

*Weather and other issues can impact or delay the start date for new closures, and for any work on the overall project.

ABOUT LAKE KYLE: Lake Kyle Park will remain closed to the public for several more months.

The City’s PARD folks are temporarily located at the house across from Old City Hall/Krug Activity Center at
104 S. Burleson St.

Details about this project: This is a planned major reconstruction of the road and part of the 2013 road bond approved by Kyle voters. The work involves moving utilities, fixing drainage and adding turn lanes. Estimated completion to Hiver street Intersection is January 2020.

Kyle Crossing Project:

Work continues on Kyle Crossing. This project began on 6/17/2019. The work will be done in several phases.

The road remains closed to southbound traffic (on the section behind EVO) but it will remain open for northbound one-way traffic between Kohler’s Crossing and I-35.

This project is expected to last approximately 180 calendar days, though weather and other issues may delay that schedule.

As of Sept. 20, the right lane heading northbound is now where traffic will travel; previously only the left lane (southbound) was open to northbound traffic.

Kyle Crossing & Kohlers Crossing:

Ranger and Commerce Construction implemented a lane closure at Kohlers Crossing and Kyle Crossing. The electronic message board was displayed in advance.

The contractor closed one lane at Kohlers Crossing on September 18, 2019. The work is estimated to take approximately two months. The traffic will have a lane to open on each side of Kohlers Crossing.

Windy Hill Rd.:

Kyle’s Public Works Department is repairing a section of roadway on Windy Hill using a new asphalt zipper.

This machine removes the old road then lays down the new layer, which is a much faster process.

Please remember to support your local businesses as they are still open during construction.
