TRAFFIC ALERT: Road Construction Update For IH-35 Corridor & Downtown Austin

While construction is tough on everyone, TxDOT is trying to do everything it can to minimize disruptions. TxDOT knows you’ve got to get where you need to go.

The intersection of FM 3406 and the I-35 frontage roads is being improved, and the FM 3406 bridge over I-35 is being reconstructed. 

PROJECT ACTIVITY

Closures are weather permitting and updated on Tuesdays and Fridays.

  • Southbound I-35 reduced to one lane under FM 3406 bridge
  • Nightly from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Sunday, June 25 until Thursday, June 29

FUNDING

  • Construction cost: $12.4 million

SCHEDULE

  • Construction start: March 2017
  • Anticipated construction completion: Spring 2019, weather permitting

I – 3 5   A T   O L T O R F   S T R E E T

Improvements include the reconstruction of the Oltorf Street bridge, improving entrance/exit ramps and frontage roads, constructing new extended entrance/exit lanes for mainlanes and ramps, and adding U-turns in both directions at Oltorf Street. Bicycle and pedestrian enhancements will also be made along the I-35 frontage roads in each direction within the project limits.

  • Southbound I-35 right lane closed between Algarita Ave & Woodward St exit. The entrance ramp from Woodland Ave will also close.
  • 10 p.m. Sunday, June 25 to 6 a.m. Monday, June 26
  • Southbound I-35 frontage road left lane closed between Oltorf St & the temporary exit ramp
  • 9 a.m. Monday, June 26 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 27
  • Southbound I-35 reduced to one lane between Holly St and Woodland Ave. Entrance ramp from Riverside Dr closed Thursday.
  • Nightly from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 through Thursday, June 29
  • Northbound frontage road right lane closed between Woodward St & the next entrance ramp
  • Daily 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday, June 26 through Friday, June 30
  • Alternating lane closures on Oltorf St in both directions across I-35
  • Nightly from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday, June 26 through Wednesday, June 28

CONSTRUCTION PHASING:

  • Phase 1: (currently in this phase)

° Widen northbound and southbound I-35 mainlanes for extended entrance/exit lanes

° Begin northbound frontage road and Oltorf Street entrance ramp improvements

  • Phase 2:

°Reconstruct Oltorf Street bridge and add new U-turns

  • Phase 3:

° Construct southbound entrance and exit ramps south of Oltorf Street

° Southbound frontage road improvements

  • Phase 4:

° Construct southbound entrance ramp north of Oltorf Street

° Complete frontage road construction

° Final paving operations

  • Construction cost: $42.6 million (Congestion Relief Initiative)

The project will reconstruct the bridge structures at Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive, as well as the frontage road bridge over Williamson Creek. New U-turn bridges will be added in both directions at Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive, and the I-35 mainlanes will be widened to incorporate shoulders and extended entrance/exit lanes to allow for better merging. Bicycle and pedestrian enhancements are also being made, and new safety lighting is being installed.   • Multiple closures southbound I-35 between Colonial Park Blvd & Boggy Creek. May be reduced to one lane at times. Entrance ramp near Williamson Creek & William Cannon exit & entrance ramps will close at times.
  • Nightly from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday, June 25 through Tuesday, June 27
  • Northbound I-35 left lane closed between Boggy Creek & Teri Ln
  • Nightly from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday, June 25 through Tuesday, June 27
  • Northbound I-35 frontage road right lane closed approaching Williamson Creek
  • Daily 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday, June 26 through Tuesday, June 27
  • Southbound I-35 exit ramp to SH 71 closed at times. Traffic should detour to the frontage road.
  • 10 p.m. Monday, June 26 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 27
  • Northbound I-35 frontage road right lane closed between Nelms Rd & William Cannon
  • Daily 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 28 through Friday, June 30
  • Southbound I-35 left lane closed between Colonial Park & Boggy Creek
  • Nightly from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 through Thursday, June 29
  • Multiple closures northbound I-35 between Boggy Creek & Teri Ln. May be reduced to one lane at times. Expect the ramps between Slaughter Ln & Teri Ln to close at times.
  • Nightly from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 through Thursday, June 29

  • Northbound I-35 frontage road right lane closed at The Lakes Blvd
  • Nightly from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday, June 26 through Friday, June 30
  • Northbound I-35 frontage road left lane closed between Rundberg Ln & Howard Ln. Locations will change nightly. Exits 243 through 245 will close as needed.
  • Nightly from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 through Thursday, June 29
  • Various closures southbound I-35 frontage road between SH 45N/Louis Henna Blvd & Parmer Ln. All ramps will close briefly from north to south as needed.
  • 9 p.m. Thursday, June 29 to 5 a.m. Friday, June 30
  • Various closures southbound I-35 frontage road between Yager Ln & Wren Ave
  • 9 p.m. Thursday, June 29 to 5 a.m. Friday, June 30

  • Southbound I-35 reduced to one right lane between MLK Blvd & exit 234B for 8th-3rd Sts — 12 a.m. Thursday, June 29 to 5 a.m. Friday, June 30
  • Southbound I-35 reduced to one lane between 15th St exit ramp & 4th St. The entrance ramp from 6th St will also close. — 12 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 to 5 a.m. Thursday, June 29
  • Southbound I-35 right lane upper deck closed between 38 1/2 St & Concordia Ave — 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 28 to 12 a.m. Thursday, June 29
