Trevino returns to Texas State, re-joins Woodard’s coaching staff

SAN MARCOS — Texas State softball head coach Ricci Woodard announced Thursday afternoon the addition of Josh Trevino to her coaching staff as a full-time assistant coach.

“I’m really excited to have Josh back in San Marcos and on this staff,” said Woodard. “He did a great job for us as a volunteer assistant coach, while he was in school here a few years ago, and I know he’ll bring great things from his time at Arizona State, which had an outstanding season last year, that’ll only help us improve and get to where we want to be.”

“I am extremely blessed to have the opportunity to come back to Texas State and to give back to the program that gave me everything,” Trevino said. “Texas State University is my home and I’m looking forward to representing the institution with pride, while working towards uplifting and supporting the student-athletes within the Texas State softball program and the Texas State softball standing that (head coach) Ricci Woodard has set. Eat ‘Em Up!”

Trevino, a Texas native, returns to the Lonestar State after spending the last 10 months in Tempe, Ariz., as a graduate assistant at Arizona State University. Arizona State, last season, won 43 of 54 games, the Pac-12 Conference Championship and reached the NCAA Super Regionals.

Yielding just 130 earned runs last season in 350.0 innings pitched, the Sun Devil pitching staff concluded the year with a 2.60 staff earned run average (ERA). Last season, the Texas State pitching staff combined for a 2.41 ERA.

Of Trevino’s six years of experience within NCAA Division I collegiate athletics, five came in San Marcos, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach (2015-2020). Ranking near the top of the Sun Belt Conference was the Bobcat pitching staff while Trevino assisted in practice plans and student-athlete development during that time.

Shutouts were a trait the Texas State pitching staff did well last season as its 13 ranked 10th on the program’s single-season list. Working with the Bobcat pitchers will be one of Trevino’s main priorities. Including reigning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Jessica Mullins. Furthermore, Trevino has spent the last seven years as an assistant coach within the Hotshots Premier Fastpitch Organization.

Trevino is a graduate of Texas State University, where he earned a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. He’s currently pursuing a master’s degree in Social and Cultural Pedagogy.
