SAN MARCOS – Duane Knudson, a professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance, and Patricia Shields, a professor in the Department of Political Science at Texas State University, have been named Regents’ Professors by the Texas State University System Board of Regents.
The board approved the honors during its quarterly meeting on Nov. 20 in Beaumont.
The Regents’ Professor designation honors outstanding members of the System’s professoriate who have achieved excellence in teaching, research, publication, and community service, while demonstrating an unwavering dedication to their students and university. Knudson and Shields are the 17th and 18th TSUS Regents’ Professors to be honored at Texas State.
It is a lifetime designation bestowed by the Board of Regents upon tenured full professors who are acknowledged as exceptional by their peers and students and recommended by the TSUS Foundation Board of Directors, the chancellor, and their university president.
Knudson came to Texas State in 2009 having previously held academic and administration positions at California State University, Chico, and Baylor University.
In his time at Texas State, Knudson has authored three books translated into eight languages, 22 book chapters, and 155 peer-reviewed articles.
He has received 23 internal and external grants, given 106 presentations, served on four editorial review boards, and authored more than three dozen articles in sports magazines and on websites.
A fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, Knudsonhas received three national, two regional, and one state award for scholarship in kinesiology and exercise science.
He has contributed to the development of internationally-used instructional resources and used his expertise to serve the U.S. Tennis Association, International Tennis Federation, U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Medicine, Royal Society, and the British Broadcasting Corporation.
Shields came to Texas State in 1978 after serving as a graduate research assistant at the Ohio State University.
In her time at Texas State, Shields has published four books, 45 journal articles, 27 book chapters and 17 book reviews. She served for 19 years as editor of Armed Forces and Society, the leading journal in civil-military relations.
Internationally admired as a productive and influential scholar, Shields had been named a fellow by the National Academy of Public Administration and received the American Society for Public Administration’s Rita Mae Kelly Research Award for outstanding research in gender-related issues.
She has also received the Lavern Burchfiled Award by the American Society for Public Administration for the outstanding quality of her book reviews in Public Administration Review.
