Two Texas State Baseball Players Named To SBC All-Tournament Team

STATESBORO, Ga. – Theodore Hoffman and Jonathan Ortega were both named to the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Championship All-Tournament Team, the league announced Sunday afternoon.

Both Hoffman, a junior, and Ortega, a sophomore, picked up their first career all-tournament team laurels. The duo helped Texas State post a 2-1 record in the championship en route to an appearance in the semifinals.

The maroon and gold registered their first postseason winning record since 2013 thanks in large part due to the efforts of Texas State’s top two hitters.

Hoffman went 8-for-12 across the three games and led Texas State with a .667 batting average. He had at least two hits in every game and scored the game-winning run in the first round against Little Rock.

He hit the lone home run for the Bobcats during the tournament and finished with team highs in RBIs (3), total bases (11), slugging percentage (.917) and on-base percentage (.692). He also scored a pair of runs.

Ortega finished the week with a .400 average (6-for-15) and tied for the team lead in doubles (2) and RBIs (3). He had eight total bases, scored twice, registered a .533 slugging percentage and tallied a .400 on-base percentage.

His main contribution came in a 3-for-6 performance to lead TXST to a 7-5 upset victory over top seeded Coastal Carolina in the quarterfinals.

He hit a two-RBI double in the second inning and drove in the game-winning run with another double in the fifth frame. He also scored once against the Chanticleers.

Hoffman was previously named to the 2017 All-SBC First Team, while Ortega landed on the 2017 All-SBC Second Team.
