Two Texas State Female Athletes Named WGCA All-American Scholars

In all, 952 student-athletes across Division I, II and III schools were honored for their work in the classroom and on the course.

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) named Texas State University women’s golfers Millie Saroha and Sasikarn Somboonsup 2016-17 Division I All-American Scholars, as announced on Wednesday, July 5.

The award is the fourth for Saroha, a senior, while Somboonsup, a freshman, earned the plaudit for the first time.

“I am exceptionally proud of Millie and Sasikarn for earning this great honor,” said Texas State women’s golf head coach Lisa Strom. “To be named an All-American Scholar by the WGCA, while competing year round shows that these two individuals have the drive to excel both academically and athletically.”

In all, 952 student-athletes across Division I, II and III schools were honored for their work in the classroom and on the course. The criteria for selection as an All-American Scholar are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA to be considered for the award is 3.5.

In addition to the 3.50 minimum GPA, student-athletes must meet a number of requirements, including being of high moral character and in good standing at the college making the nomination, and the student-athlete must have played in 50 percent of the team’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year nominated.

Saroha, an international relations major, concluded her career this past spring with a 77.21 scoring average, ranking 10th on the Texas State all-time career list.

She competed in eight event with seven appearances in the TXST lineup in 2016-17. She carded a season-best 67 (-4) to open the Schooner Fall Classic en route to a season-best 216 (+3) 54-hole score.

The 67 is tied for the second-best 18-hole round in TXST program history.

She tied for 31st at the Sun Belt Championship with a 230 (75-78-77). In addition to her work on the course, Saroha was named an Oak Farms Dairy “Cream of the Crop” honoree for posting a 4.0 GPA for the 2016 academic year.

Somboonsup turned in a stellar freshman campaign in 2016-17 as she was named both the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Newcomer and Freshman of the Year, along with garnering first team accolades from the league’s head coaches.

In addition, she played her way onto the Sun Belt All-Tournament Team, winning the individual championship with a career-best 6-under 210 total (68-73-69).

She also won the weather-shortened Web.com Intercollegiate with a 4-under 140 (68-72), becoming only the fifth Bobcat to win multiple events in the same season. Overall, Somboonsup concluded the season with a 74.69 scoring average to rank second on the team and third in the Sun Belt.

The 74.69 season stoke average ranks seventh-best on the Texas State all-time list.
