Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials agreed to waive $1.3 billion in toll fees billed between 2007 and March 1.
The refunds will be sent to those who used toll roads operated by TxDOT, according to Sam Bass, the executive director of TxDOT.
Legislators approved a bill that requires TxDOT operated toll roads to cap toll late fees at $6 per transaction and $48 annually.
The state agency plans to charge late fees per invoice instead of per toll transaction. TxDOT also no longer uses the previous collection agency that charged a $25 collection fee for each individual violation.
Those who paid their late fees before March 1 will not receive refunds. Those who did not pay their late fees will see a notice waiving those fees on their account within weeks, Bass said.
The decision to reset the fees was made so that the agency would use only one late fee structure rather than collecting fees from the previous fee structure and the new fee structure.
