TXST Soccer Falls At Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Texas State soccer team dropped its first Sun Belt Conference road match of the season Friday night at Little Rock 2-0 at the Coleman Sports Complex. 

With the setback, the Bobcats are now 1-5-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference play while the Trojans improve to 1-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Sun Belt. 

Bailey Peschel took two shots attempts in the first half. The first came in the ninth minute and went just wide of the left post. Her second attempt was five minutes later and was blocked by a defender. 

The last shot of the opening half came from Kiara Gonzales. The sophomore battled two defenders and took a rip with her right foot that saw the ball go over the crossbar in the 20th minute. 

Just three minutes into the second half, the Bobcats were called for a foul about 25 yards from goal. Seconds earlier, however, a Trojan tripped up a TXST player with the ball but no whistled was blown.

Little Rock took advantage and Morgan Smocovich sent the free-kick into the right-side netting for a 1-0 lead. 

Texas State had a great opportunity to tie the match in the 59th minute. Alana Clark sent in a cross off a throw-in that was just over the head of a wide-open Emma Jones at the six-yard box. 

In the 62nd minute, the ball took a bounce into the upper arm of a Bobcat defender inside the box, and the whistled was blown for a handball.

Doro Greulich got the ball just past the outreached hands of Beth Agee on the penalty kick to increase the Trojans’ advantage to 2-0. 

A foul was called on Little Rock near the end line and just outside the 18-yard box giving TXST a short free-kick chance early in the 74th minute.

The ball found Kayla Streber at the back post and her shot beat the goalkeeper. However, a defender was there to head the ball away before it could cross the line. 

Haley Shaw nearly got the Bobcats on the scoreboard in the 79th minute. Her attempt from the left side got through the keeper’s arms but was cleared away at the last second by a defender.

Holly Streber would get her head on the ensuing corner kick that saw the ball sail just over the crossbar. 

The Bobcats held an 11-10 advantage in shots led by two apiece from Moore and Peschel. 

Agee made three saves between the posts.
