ULM Mounts Late Comeback To Top Texas State

“In a matter of a few moments, you can go from winning a game to losing like… That’s how crazy this business is.” Head Coach Ty Harrington said.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team lost 6-5 to University of Louisiana at Monroe Thursday night at Bobcat Ballpark.

The Bobcats fell to 20-15 overall and 7-6 in the SBC, while the Warhawks (10-25, 5-8 SBC) snapped a six-game losing streak. TXST is on a season long four-game losing skid and has also dropped seven of its last ten contests.

Texas State led 4-1 after eight innings, but ULM scored five runs in the top of the ninth to earn the come-from-behind victory.

Junior Derek Scheible and sophomore Jaylen Hubbard each had two hits for the Bobcats. Hubbard hit his first home run of the season in the sixth inning. True freshman Zachary Leigh made his first start in left field and finished 2-for-3 with the first hit and RBI of his career in the fifth.

Sophomore Connor Reich allowed four runs on six hits in 8.1 innings, while striking out four and walking just one. The outing was the longest of his career. Fellow sophomore Brayden Theriot (2-1) recorded the final two outs and was saddled with the loss after conceding three runs on two hits.

Josh Leone started for ULM and left after allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.2 frames. Tyler Schwaner (1-1) picked up the victory after allowing just one hit across 1.1 innings, and Anthony Herrera conceded one unearned run in the ninth to collect his fifth save of the season.

TXST outhit ULM 10-9 and finished with no errors to two from the visitors.

The two teams will continue the weekend series at 6 p.m. April 14.

TEXAS STATE COACH TY HARRINGTON

Opening Statement…

“In a matter of a few moments, you can go from winning a game to losing like we did. That’s how crazy this business is. It’s unfortunate for us as a team because Connor Reich did such a good job on the mound. He pitched well enough to win, but it didn’t work out that way. I thought he was going to have a chance to finish it out in the ninth. I still felt good with (Brayden) Theriot coming into the game. (ULM) rolled a ball through the middle of the field, and that’s the way this game goes every once in a while. We’re struggling right now having lost four in a row. Our team was trying to go out there and win tonight, and it didn’t work out. It’s frustrating. This one hurts. It burns. We’re at home, and we’re trying to get some momentum back. We had a victory right in front of us, and it got away from us, but they have to get up tomorrow and be ready to go.”

On what the team will need to improve on tomorrow

“We need effort and concentration. (ULM) has some excitement and momentum coming out of tonight. We need to come out early and score. We had a chance in the first inning to bust it open and weren’t able to take advantage. We need to come out with some fire and competitiveness.”

On Jaylen Hubbard’s second career home run…

“That was good. At that point and time, it was huge for us because it gave us a little separation. That made us feel a little bit better about what we were trying to do going into the ninth inning. Obviously, it didn’t turn out that way.”
