SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the second year in a row, the Texas State soccer team had multiple players selected to one of the United Soccer coaches Scholar All-West Teams that were announced on Monday.
Kaylee Davis was a first team selection and Heather Martin was picked to the second team.
The duo are the first Bobcat juniors to be named to a scholar all-region team and the only student-athletes from a Sun Belt Conference program to be recognized. They join Chandler Cooney, Rachel Grout and Kassi Hormuth as the only TXST players to ever receive the accolade.
Davis, a food and nutrition major with a 3.59 GPA, led the Bobcats and tied the program record with 18 goals in helping lead the team to its first-ever Sun Belt Conference regular season championship. She concluded the 2018 season tied for third in the nation in goals.
Her performance saw her be named as the Sun Belt’s Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year while also becoming a two-time All-Sun Belt First Team pick.
The Allen, Texas native ended the year netting a goal in 12 of the last 14 matches. Twice she recorded a six-matching goal scoring streak that rank as the second longest in both program and Sun Belt histories.
Seven of her goals were match-winners that set a new Texas State season record and tied for the third most in the country.
Davis also finished fourth in the nation in goals per match (0.90), seventh in points (37), eighth in points per match (1.85), 23rd in shots per match (4.30) and 33rd in shots on goal per contest (2.00). All of those marks rank in the top three in program history as well.
Martin is a psychology major and maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA. Last week, she was selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Second Team to become the third Texas State soccer player to earn the accolade.
In goal this season, Martin set single-season TXST records with a 0.45 goals against average, .919 save percentage and nine shutouts. Her save percentage was the second best in the country this season, ranks second in Sun Belt history and is the 23rd best all-time in the NCAA. Meanwhile, the junior’s GAA was the seventh best in the nation and her shutout total ranked 29th.
The Midlothian, Texas native finished with an 11-2-4 record in helping the Bobcats win the Sun Belt regular season title and reach the conference championship finals. She posted 91 saves, the fifth most in TXST history, and ended the year with 212 careers saves to place her third on the program’s career list.
Her performance in goal helped Texas State end the season on a 13-match unbeaten streak, which is tied for the longest active streak in the nation. She was also picked as the Sun Belt’s Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-Sun Belt First Team selection for the second straight year.
