UPDATE: Citizen Tip Credited For Arrest In Feb. Hit & Run Accident

Antonio Alonzo

The suspect in a fatal hit and run accident in February turned himself into authorities over the weekend after the San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Antonio Rene Alonzo (DOB 09/08/1996) of San Marcos is in custody after a warrant for “Accident Involving Death” was issued for his arrest.

Alonzo is the suspect from a February 29 accident involving a red Chevrolet truck that struck and killed Eligio Vasquez of San Antonio.

Except for not reporting the collision, SMPD reports that Alonzo was helpful and forthcoming to the investigation. He was magistrated and released on a $10,000 bond.

“We’re thankful to the community for helping us solve this case, which resulted in the death of Mr. Vasquez,” said Interim Police Chief Bob Klett. “Our condolences continue to go out to his family and friends.”

SMPD says this arrest was only possible after a citizen recognized the vehicle from the prior press releases and called with information.

Previous Release 3/3/20: Video Footage Released in Hit and Run Fatality

SMPD has released video footage of the pickup suspected of being involved in a fatal hit and run accident early Sunday morning that killed a San Antonio man.

Here is a more detailed description of the truck: red single cab pickup with a bed cover, bluish headlights (right one broken out from collision), and red LED strip between tailgate and bumper going fully across the back of the truck.

Police estimate this is a ’90s model truck based on the wire antenna, which is now missing. It would also likely have minor damage to the right front side. Note: it’s a smaller truck, possibly a Chevy S-10, Isuzu, Ford Ranger or Toyota Tacoma.

Previous Release 3/2/20: Police Search for Truck and Driver in Hit and Run Death

San Marcos Police continue searching for the driver in a weekend hit and run incident that resulted in the death of a San Antonio man.

On Saturday, February 29 at 1:27 a.m., a caller to 9-1-1 reported seeing a man lying on the edge of the roadway in the 200 block S. Guadalupe St.

Responding officers located Eligio Vasquez (DOB 01/26/1951) of San Antonio, TX, who was not breathing.

Officers began CPR on Mr. Vasquez, and this was continued by San Marcos Fire and Hays County EMS personnel.

Responders were able to get Mr. Vasquez’s pulse back and transported him to Seton-Hays in Kyle, but he was soon pronounced deceased by the attending physician.

Justice of the Peace Maggie H. Moreno was called, and she ordered an autopsy through the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. Next of kin has been notified.

The initial investigation by the San Marcos Police Collision Investigation Team determined this was a hit and run auto-pedestrian collision.

The offending vehicle and driver were not located; however, pieces of a vehicle were located, and still photos were obtained from security cameras at surrounding businesses.

Investigators are searching for an older model red pickup, potentially an extended cab Chevy S-10, with a missing wire radio antenna on the right side of the hood.

The truck should have minor damage to the front right, including the missing antenna. It was last seen going southbound on S. Guadalupe Street after the collision.
