Ellis was a pledge for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and was discovered deceased by friends a little after 11 a.m. Monday.
The San Marcos Police investigation into the death of Texas State University student Matthew Ellis will potentially take months to resolve pending toxicology results from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“This is an ongoing investigation, and it’s too early to know if criminal charges will be warranted,” said Chief of Police Chase Stapp. “Once all the evidence is known, if we have probable cause to file charges we’ll work with the district attorney’s office to move forward at that time.”
At about 11:35 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, SMPD received a call at 1651 Post Rd (Millennium Apartments) in reference to a subject who was not breathing. EMS and officers arrived and found Matthew McKinley Ellis (DOB 08/31/1997) unresponsive, and he was declared deceased at 12:28 p.m. by Judge Maggie H. Moreno. Ellis was a pledge for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and was discovered deceased by friends a little after 11 a.m. Monday.
An autopsy is being performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. Preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol may have been a factor in this death, but investigators are awaiting toxicology results from the autopsy.
Ellis was a current student at Texas State University and lived on campus. The Texas State Police Department has offered assistance in this ongoing investigation.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Ellis family and to the entire University community,” said Mayor John Thomaides.

Dear Sister Comrade Denise Trauth:
In receipt of your admitted "tragedy" upon finding , that as President of Texas State University,
"It is imperative that our entire university community develop a culture that places the highest priority on the safety of its students, faculty, and staff."
Please be consoled in knowing Matthew was white, and his passing has contributed to your personal campaign here at Texas State by which you on a daily basis inculcate racial guilt and expressly advocate the elimination of 'white supremacy". Gratefully, your conscious indifference to these epic alcholic rituals has permanently relieved Matthew from all further accusations. Almost makes me want to take up drinking.
Hi Carrie,
Your comment was edited to correct the misspelling of President Denise Trauth's name.
