SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision in 10 innings Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Bobcats fell to 17-15-1 overall in their first extra-inning contest of the season, while UTRGV improved to 17-16.
TXST initially took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the maroon and gold was unable to push another run across the rest of the way. UTRGV found the tying effort in the fifth and then scored the game-winning marker in the top of the first extra frame.
Junior Jaylen Hubbard finished with two of Texas State’s five hits. Senior Dylan Paul scored the lone run on a balk.
Junior Brandon Lewis took a no-decision after allowing just one run across the first 5.0 innings. He struck out five and did not issue a walk, while conceding six hits.
Classmate Anthony Pagano and senior Cam Baird were flawless for the next 4.0 innings. Junior Braden Pearson (1-1) suffered the loss after giving up one run and two hits.
UTRGV reliever Jorge Flores (1-0) picked up the win after tossing the ninth inning. Max Balderrama, Jr. earned his first save after keeping TXST off the scoreboard in the bottom of the 10th. Starter Jerred Quartier went 6.0 innings and gave up one run on five hits. He struck out nine and walked one.
Anthony Gomez and Ryan Fish posted three hits each to help UTRGV to 11 total for the game. They scored both runs. Coleman Grubbs also had a pair of hits.
Texas State is now set to head back out on the road for a three-game Sunbelt Conference series April 13-15 at Georgia State.
