Winter Storm Predicts Ice And Snow For Hays, Travis Counties

An arctic cold front will bring cold, wet weather through Central Texas according to the latest forecast data.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch and warning for Monday night and into Tuesday morning for Hays and Travis County.

An arctic cold front will bring cold, wet weather through Central Texas according to the latest forecast data. Temperatures are supposed to drop to below freezing by midnight (Monday Night) Tuesday morning.

Texas Department of Transportation crews have treated roads throughout the Austin area including I35 in preparation for icy conditions. The area is expected to receive up to one-tenth of an inch in ice accumulation, but some areas could see as much as one-fourth of an inch.

But ice isn’t the only thing to be expected. Central Texas could potentially see up to an inch of snow in some areas. San Marcos could see .08 inches of ice by 5PM on Tuesday as well as .19 inches of snow. Austin could see .22 inches of snow and .04 inches of ice.

The wintry weather should tapper off in the early afternoon, but meteorologists say it’ll return Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. Wind chills are expected to be in the teens and low 20s.

With the anticipated freezing temperatures, it is important to keep your water pipes from freezing. Freezing pipes can bust and be very expensive to replace. It’s a good idea to drip your faucets and wrap all exposed pipes. Below are some additional tips to keep in mind.

Keep the heat turned on
Allow faucets to drip
Keep interior doors open
Seal up cracks and holes
Apply heating tape
Add extra insulation

TxDOT crews will remain on standby after roads are treated to deal with icy patches.

Drivers are advised to avoid the roads in icy conditions if possible. Over the course of four hours, Austin EMS responded to 37 car accidents caused by icy conditions a week and a half ago.
