Texas State Women’s Golf Hosts Jim West Challenge To Start Fall Season

This season a Bobcat will carry a special bag at each tournament to honor United States Army Captain Alex Funkhouser, who was killed on Memorial Day (May 29) 2006 of injuries sustained when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near him HMMWV during reconnaissance patrol operations in Baghdad, Iraq.

SAN MARCOS, TexasThe Texas State women’s golf team starts its 2017-18 season by hosting the Jim West Challenge on Monday and Tuesday. The tournament will be contested at The Club at Carlton Woods on the Fazio Course in The Woodlands, Texas.

 

Playing at a par 71, 6,010-yard, the Fazio Course as The Club at Carlton Woods opened in 2005 and was ranked as the “Best New Private Club in Texas” and “#3 Best New Private Course in the US” by Golf Digest. The course was designed by Tom Fazio, who has the most credits on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses and Golfweek’s collection of America’s Best for a living designer.

 

Joining the Bobcats, who ended last season ranked 85th in the nation, in the field will be four teams that ranked in the top 25 at the end of 2017 with Duke leading the way at No. 10. Others in the top 25 are Kent State (14th), Oklahoma (25th) and Texas A&M (24th). The field also features # top 100 squads: August (42nd), Missouri (55th), Notre Dame (66th), Southern Miss (76th), TCU (40th), UTSA (71st) and Texas Tech (35th).

 

Both days begin with a shotgun start with Monday starting at 9 a.m. and Tuesday’s final round at 8:30 a.m. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday with the second round slated to start around 2 p.m.

 

Competing for TXST will be Sasikarn Somboonsup, Sarah White, Anne-Charlotte Mora, Sachika Singh and Mackenzie Walters. Somboonsup is the defending Sun Belt Conference Individual Champion and ranked second on the team last season with a 74.69 scoring average.

 

Mora ended last season with a sixth place finish at the SBC Championships and led the Bobcats with a 74.52 scoring average. White joined the team during the spring portion of the 2017 season after transferring from Western Michigan. The Grand Rapids, Michigan native recorded a 77.59 stroke average over 17 rounds.

 

Singh and White are both freshmen and will be playing in their first collegiate tournament. Singh is from Faridabad, Haryana, India and attended IMG Academy in Florida. White joins TXST from Tom C. Clark High School in San Antonio.

Through the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program, Texas State will raise monies throughout the season in support of his daughters’, Kaitlyn and Allison, college expenses. Carrying the bag during the Jim West Challenge will be White.

 

The Bobcats will tee off from the first three holes alongside Augusta and Texas A&M for the first two rounds.
