Get ready for ‘Wonder Wiener’…. a Wiener Dog invasion! People will come from as far as California and Florida to bring their pups to compete in Buda.

“We’re finishing up delivering our sponsorship packets, getting the last of the bleachers put in, and just getting ready for the big crowd,” said Buda Lions Club Volunteer Justin Krause.

The Wiener Dog Races, as they are known for today, are a major event in Buda, but that was not always the case.

“The first year we had maybe 30 dogs and we were up in the greenbelt. We got on CBS Morning News being featured right before the Kentucky Derby and went from 30 dogs to 600 dogs the next year.”

“At 10 a.m. we have the starting of the heat races on Saturday. The top two dogs will qualify for the finals on Sunday afternoon. We have another set of heat races at 2 p.m., and another set of heat races on Sunday morning.”

Even if residents don’t have a wiener dog to enter, they can come out and be a spectator.

“We will have about 100 craft booths that feature anything from jewelry, clothing, and Wiener Dog related merchandise. We also have local rescue groups that have rescue dogs and tons of games for the kids.”

A weekend pass is 5 dollars for adults and kids over 12. Children under 12 are free. There is also free parking behind Cabela’s and you will be shuttled to City Park. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

This year’s theme is ‘Wonder Wiener.’ For more information go to www.budalions.com.
