If there is enough afternoon sunshine, light to moderate winds and lingering elevated incoming background levels could be enough for ozone to possibly reach the lower end of the “Moderate” range in parts of the Houston area, with highest concentrations in the afternoon and early evening.

Continuing continental haze featuring residual smoke from ongoing seasonal fires across portions of the lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast U.S., including in East Texas, is expected to be transported along and ahead of a relatively strong cold front as it advances southward across the state. The resulting elevated fine particulate levels are forecast to be highest along and just ahead of the frontal boundary, while diminishing rapidly behind the front as it progresses from north to south. Overall, depending on the timing, duration, and intensity of the remaining haze with smoke, the daily PM2.5 AQI is forecast to reach the middle to upper end of the “Moderate” range in parts of the Beaumont-Port Arthur and Houston areas; possibly the lower end of the “Moderate” range in parts of the Tyler-Longview area; and the upper end of the “Good” range (perhaps with an isolated low “Moderate” or two) in parts of the Austin, Victoria, and Waco-Killeen areas, with highest concentrations occuring generally through the first half of the day.

Otherwise and elsewhere in the state, moderate winds, cooler temperatures behind the front, heavy cloud cover, and/or lower incoming background levels should help keep air quality in the “Good” range in most spots.

Light winds, warm temperatures, abundant afternoon sunshine, and increasing incoming background levels could be enough for ozone to possibly reach the lower end of the “Moderate” range in parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with highest concentrations in the afternoon and early evening.

Should the seasonal burning activity continue across the Southeast U.S., particularly in East Texas, the resulting patchy residual smoke could begin building back across portions of East, Southeast, North Central, South Central, and South Texas at varying intensities. Overall, depending on the fire activity and intensity/coverage of the resulting smoke, the daily PM2.5 AQI is forecast to reach the lower to middle end of the “Moderate” range in parts of the Beaumont-Port Arthur, Brownsville-McAllen, Corpus Christi, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Tyler-Longview, and Victoria areas; possibly the lower end of the “Moderate” range in parts of the Laredo area; and the upper end of the “Good” range (perhaps with an isolated low “Moderate” or two) in parts of the Austin and San Antonio areas, with concentrations gradually increasing over the course of the day.

Otherwise across South Central Texas and elsewhere in the state, moderate to strong winds and/or lower incoming background levels should help keep air quality in the “Good” range in most spots.
