Lingering smoke from overnight New Years celebrations could result in locally and temporarily elevated PM2.5 levels at times, primarily in urban and suburban areas across Texas. When combined with light winds and limited vertical mixing, the daily PM2.5 AQI could reach the “Moderate” range in the Austin, Houston, and San Antonio areas. In the remaining urban areas across Texas, the daily PM2.5 AQI could reach the upper end of the “Good” range. In all areas, the highest concentrations are expected in the morning hours.

Elsewhere in the state, Moderate winds, cold temperatures, heavy cloud cover, and/or lower incoming background levels should help keep air quality in the “Good” range in most spots statewide.
