Youth Activity Scholarships Available For City Recreation Programs

The City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting applications to provide scholarships to low to moderate income San Marcos youth in an amount up to $150 per child.

The scholarship pays 50% of the registration fees for any of the programs offered by the City including team sports, Summer Fun, and a number of other programs and camps. The scholarship program is paid with Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds that are given to the City by the U.S. Department of Public Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Scholarships are limited in number and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Eligibility does not guarantee assistance and assistance does not guarantee program registration. Participants must pay one-half of all program fees.

Registration and payment for programs must occur on or before September 30, 2017 to qualify.

The CDBG program requires the City to show that the child receiving a Youth Activity Scholarship is from a family with a yearly income that is considered to be low to moderate, based on the number of family members who live in the child’s home. The City will accept the following evidence that the child is eligible for the scholarship:

  1. Proof that the child has been approved by his or her school to receive a free or reduced lunch; or
  2. Proof that the child lives in housing provided through the San Marcos Housing Authority; or
  3. Proof that the child lives in a household that participates in the WIC program.

Applications can be completed in person at 401 E. Hopkins or they can be accessed and printed at www.sanmarcostx.gov/youthactivity.

For additional information, call the Parks and Recreation Main Office at 512.393.8400.
