Aggies Sneak Past Bobcats Tuesday

Texas State initially took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the home side immediately flipped the advantage with three markers in the home half of the initial frame.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas State baseball team lost 7-5 to No. 14 Texas A&M Tuesday night at Blue Bell Park.

The Bobcats dropped to 20-16-1 overall, while the powerhouse Aggies improved to 28-9 on the campaign.

Texas State initially took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the home side immediately flipped the advantage with three markers in the home half of the initial frame.

TXST tied the game up on three separate occasions but could not take another lead. TAMU moved back on top in each of the third, sixth and seventh innings before adding a final insurance tally in the eighth.

True freshman Dalton Shuffield continued his torrid stretch with a 3-for-4 effort and a run scored. Senior Dylan Paul and juniors Jonathan Ortega and Ryan Newman all had a pair of hits. Ortega hit his second home run of the season and drove home two runs. Senior Derek Scheible scored twice.

Junior Brandon Lewis started on the mound for the Bobcats and allowed four runs on six hits across 4.0 innings. Sophomore Zachary Leigh tossed the next 2.0 frames and conceded one run on three hits.

Junior Braden Pearson (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing a pair of tallies on two hits in the next 1.1 innings.

Hunter Coleman paced the Aggies with a 3-for-4 effort that included two RBIs and a run. Michael Helman, Logan Foster and Braden Shewmake all finished with two hits and combined for four runs. Chandler Morris drove in a pair of runs.

Chandler Jozwiak made the start but was yanked after giving up three runs on four hits in just 1.0 inning of work.

Texas A&M burned through seven arms in the contest, with Cason Sherrod earning the win after tossing 2.2 innings of one-run ball.

He gave up three hits and struck out two. Nolan Hoffman gave up one hit but otherwise pitched a clean ninth inning for his seventh save.

Texas State is set to begin an eight-game homestand with a three-game series April 20-22 against South Alabama.
