First Youth Commission Meeting Planned

This commission will meet monthly. The San Marcos City Council selected its members at their February meeting.

The San Marcos Youth Commission will have their inaugural meeting on Wednesday, April 19 at 6 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center.

“Our primary goal for the Youth Commission is to instill a passion for civic and community engagement among our youngest future leaders,” said Dr. Michelle Hamilton, Chair of the San Marcos Commission on Children & Youth. “This group of high school ambassadors will connect the voice and concerns of youth in San Marcos to the City of San Marcos. In addition, the Youth Commission will focus their time and energy on a social issue they would like to collectively impact throughout the next year.”

This commission will meet monthly. The San Marcos City Council selected its members at their February meeting.

The San Marcos Youth Commission consists of 15 voting representatives serving one-year terms from each of the following: four San Marcos High School students; one San Marcos Academy student; one student from a private or charter school; one homeschooled student; one student from outside the city limits but inside SMCISD boundaries; one Texas State University student; one Gary Job Corps student; one Phoenix Academy student; and four other at-large youth members.

The commission may also have additional self-selected, nonvoting general members who wish to take part in any committee or project.

The commission represents the voices of the youth in the community and advises elected officials and other policymakers about issues that affect and are of interest to youth.

It also offers policy-making recommendations on issues affecting youth, identifies youth issues that need community attention, and works on projects of the San Marcos Commission on Children & Youth.
