HAYS COUNTY – Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra announced he will be seeking a second term in office in 2022, Becerra was elected to his first term in 2018.
“Let’s do this! I’m running for re-election. We’ve accomplished a lot in the last few years, but we’re just getting started. We have more work to do, together,” Becerra said. “This is the moment where we can choose to keep our positive momentum going and bounce back post COVID stronger than ever before.”
In Becerra’s first term he led the way in creating a public defender’s office, started the process of assessing the needs for a centralized no kill animal shelter and creation of a Center for Mental Wellness, Education, and Research, with a dedicated VA wing. He also presented, and later the court adopted, the lowest property tax rate in over 30 years.
Becerra was also investigated by the Texas Attorney General’s office, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) the Department of Justice (DOJ), and Texas Rangers in April 2020 for allegations of disclosing county budget information to MRG Health to obtain COVID-19 antibody tests, and attempted to persuade local mayors to buy the tests by the thousands.
According to a letter from the Texas AG’s office addressed to the Texas Rangers, Becerra may have committed offenses such as abuse of official capacity, official oppression, misuse of official information, theft, misapplication of fiduciary property, tampering with a government record, and election code laws.
There has been no update to the status of the investigation.
In his next term, Becerra wants to focus on increasing transparency in County government, responsible business friendly growth, protecting our valuable water resources, protecting our residents, and continuing the citizen focused projects he began in his first term. He sees unprecedented opportunities to maximize new federal infrastructure funds for roads and bridges, water and wastewater, and high-speed broadband.
“Our [Hays County Emergency Management] work ethic, passion to serve, and perseverance made Hays County leaders in the state’s response to the COVID19 pandemic,” Becerra said.
The primary election will take place on March 1, 2022.

Mr. Becerra's laundry list of criminal behavior pales with respect to a recently
discovered matter involving the entire roster of commissioner court members.
It's about exercising authority which, as a matter of law, does not exist.
It's an incredible story--were it not for incontrovertible proof that shows
just far certain people will go when it comes to obtaining "positive outcomes"
by means of criminal solutions. I've explored the evidence and law, and it is damning.
Whether following disclosure of these facts Abbott and the office of Attorney General
rips through here with a vengeance before the 2022 election depends largely on how
many folks here stand up and ask for help. Otherwise this matter due to the size of its
malfeasance will make prosecution look like a mass scale political execution.
