Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.
The Job Corps program is authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (supersedes WIA 1998). For more information about the Job Corps program at a national level, please visit their Official Public Web Site.
GJCC Gets a Visit from IAM & AWU
The International Association of Machinist and Aerospace for Workers Union visited the Transportation Communication Union (TCU) trade at the Gary Job Corps Center.
Representatives shared with the students what it was like in their trade areas in the past, what they should expect now, and employer partnerships. They also discussed them fighting for employees ’ fair wages, safety, and other important employment options.
Students ask questions and express their appreciation for the visitors. Visitors Terri Ramos-Vice President of Labor Services, Rachel Cavazos-Director of Labor Services, and Dora Cervantes-General Secretary were really impressed with how many students wanted to go into the TCU areas and were especially enthusiastic about the number of females going into trades previously known as “male trades.”
Late Night Job Training
Overhead Lineman (OHL) students responded to a blackout last Thursday night at the Gary Job Corps Center. Students learned “night skills” while they responded to downed high voltage wires.
Instructor Adam Cantu stated that “there was a weak spot on one of the wires that arced and ended up burning 2 out of the 3 high voltage wires. I’m really proud of my students, they responded to the situation at 9:00 PM and worked diligently. This project would have, at a minimum, cost $10,000 to repair with another company.”

Jobs Attached for GJCC Graduates
Dylan Solis and Aaliyah Coleman are graduating this week from Gary Job Corps Center and are going straight to work. Dylan has a full-time job with TDCJ J.B. Connlay Unit and Aaliyah has a full-time job with Travis County Jail.
Both students received their correctional officer trade and were really excited to be honored in the Student Business Meeting.
Career Transition Readiness Open House
The Career Transition Readiness department hosted an open house for the Grad-90 Program, which is a Gary Job Corps project where students will be graduating within 90 days work on obtaining their M.A.J.A.C (military, apprentice, job match, advanced trade, or college).
Students learn about resume writing, do job searches, and practice interview skills.
The open house had a raffle, where students could win three different themed prize baskets. The themes were: starting a job, movie night, and what you would need for an interview.
