The Flyin’ A’s, A Wife And Husband Duo, Return To Lockhart For Evenings With The Songwriter

Evenings with the Songwriter will welcome back The Flyin’ A’s to the historic Dr. Eugene Clark Library on Tuesday, July 30, at 7:00 PM. Hosted by Lockhart songwriter Fletcher Clark; in its ninth season, this monthly series is free to the public.

The Flyin’ A’s perform Americana with a Texas Kick. They are a wife and husband duo, who hail from Austin, Texas, with Texas roots in all they do. The high energy duo is famous for their top-notch songwriting, breathtaking harmonies, and exceptional live performance.

Their latest album ‘You Drive Me Crazy’ was selected to be on the 2017 first-round Grammy Ballot and has taken them on tour around the US, UK, EU and NZ. From Stuart Adamson’s outstanding lead guitar work and gritty vocals to Hilary Claire Adamson’s powerhouse vocal gymnastics and lilting harmonies, they combine the best of Texas country, southern blues, folk and gospel to create an original sound that is all their own.

It all began after their meeting in 2003 at the Kerrville Folk Festival when Stuart enlisted Hilary to serve as a backup singer for his own band. But as her vocal prowess sharpened and grew, she found herself being pressed more and more towards center stage until a true collaboration emerged.

The pair married in 2005, and the following year The Flyin’ A’s released their first album, ‘Blacktop, Back Roads.” In their subsequent touring in Texas, across the U.S. and internationally, they racked up some impressive endorsements.

Stuart grew up in San Antonio, Texas, his mother’s hometown, playing as a teenager in his father’s classic country band, as well as a single acoustic act. His father came from a long line of ranchers in West Texas, and the Adamson family cattle brand, The Flying A, is the origin of the band’s name.

As soon as Stuart had a chance he chased his songwriting dreams to Nashville. As he came to his senses, he returned to the Lone Star State where soon after The Flyin’ A’s were born. Hilary’s family moved to the self-proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World, Austin, Texas when she was just 5 years old from LaCrosse, WI.

Her musical roots started young singing gospel music in the Southern Methodist Church and jazz with her Grandma Niecy on holidays when visiting extended family on her father’s family farm in Byron, Minnesota.

Moving to Lubbock, Texas, she pursued a degree in music by day while cutting her teeth as a backup singer for local blues and country bands by night. She set her sights on finding her voice as a songwriter, leading her to the Kerrville Folk Festival’s famous songwriting school – and her collaboration with Stuart. Their combined influences of gospel, jazz, country, blues and Texas songwriting greats are woven into the eclectic mix found in their songwriting and vocal expression.

“Hil was camping with us at Kerrville for that first festival,” says Fletcher Clark, “and all of us could see the immediate chemistry when she and Stuart met. These dear friends were my guests in 2014, and I look forward to an update on their fast-moving career.”

Evenings with the Songwriter is not merely a performance nor an interview nor a song swap nor a lecture, but elements of all – ‘exploring the art and craft of songwriting’ – having featured scores of celebrated artists: Jon Ims, Shake Russell, Tish Hinojosa, Vince Bell, Butch Hancock, Christine Albert, Dana Cooper, Susan Gibson, Rex Foster, Eric Taylor, Shelley King, and Walt Wilkins.

This Ninth Season continues with Caroline Aiken, Hogan & Moss, tba, and Jack Pledge. The ambiance of the Dr. Eugene Clark Library Lyceum, the oldest continually operating library building in Texas, provides this unique venue for Evenings with the Songwriter, enjoyed by audience and guests alike.

The series is presented to the public free of charge on the last Tuesday of the month (except December), thanks to City of Lockhart Library Director Bertha Martinez and her staff.
