Businesses that can also establish that they have been continuously owned by the same family or have operated continuously from a building that is at least 50 years old and have maintained its architectural integrity will receive additional recognition.

The Hays County Historical Commission and San Marcos Main Street Program announced that Landis Shoe Clinic was recognized for the Texas Treasure Business Award from the Texas Historical Commission (THC) at the 2018 Love Downtown Awards, which took place on Nov. 9 from 6 to 8 PM at the Hays County Courthouse Lawn, 111 E. San Antonio St.

Landis Shoe Clinic has over 100 years of serving customers in San Marcos and Hays County through three generations of the Mendez Family specializing in custom made boots, all manner of leather repair and extraordinary customer service.

The Texas Treasure Business Award program pays tribute to businesses that have provided employment opportunities and support to the state’s economy for 50 years or more.

Created in 2005, the program recognizes well-established Texas businesses and their exceptional historical contributions to the state’s economic growth and prosperity.

Businesses that can also establish that they have been continuously owned by the same family or have operated continuously from a building that is at least 50 years old and have maintained its architectural integrity received additional recognition.

The shop was named E. Mendez Shoe Shop when the current owner’s grandfather, Emilio Mendez, founded it in 1917 on West San Antonio Street.

Ronnie Mendez, the current owner of the business, said his father, Phillip, named it Landis Shoe Clinic when he returned from World War II in 1945 and purchased the business from his father, buying all new shoe repair equipment from the Landis Company.
