Men’s Basketball Falls To Georgia Southern In Low-Scoring Game

Texas State trailed by three points after Georgia Southern senior guard Jelani Hewitt made two throws with 11 seconds left in regulation.

Georgia Southern fouled D.J Brown, senior guard, on the ensuing possession. Brown missed the first free throw attempt, clinching the 40-36 victory for the Eagles.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t have a good offensive night and that’s the reason for our loss,” Coach Danny Kaspar said. “If we would of shot a little better we definitely would of won this game tonight.”

There were a total of 11 lead changes as neither team could find an offensive rhythm for the entire game. 

The Eagles closed the deficit by three points with three minutes left in the first half.  Texas State began the first half forcing turnovers to spur a 11-0 run against Georgia Southern.

The teams combined for 24 turnovers in the first half, resulting in a 21-19 score.

Emani Gant, junior forward, continued the offensive attack against the Eagles, leading the Bobcats with 10 points with Brown adding eight points.

“Our players gave great effort tonight, and played a heck of a defensive game,” Kaspar said. “We rebounded well against the leading rebounding team tonight.”

Texas State dropped to a 7-4 season record and 1-1 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Bobcats will next face Georgia State Jan. 5 in Atlanta, Georgia.
