NCAA Publicly Recognizes Three Texas State Teams

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Three Texas State Athletics teams have been recognized publicly by the NCAA for their outstanding performance in the classroom during the past four years.

Based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR), Texas State’s women’s cross country, golf and tennis teams have posted scores in the top 10 percent of their sports.

This marks the eighth consecutive year that the Texas State women’s tennis team has earned a Public Recognition award and the fourth straight season that the women’s golf team has earned the honor. It marks the first time that the women’s cross country has been recognized and the first time in school history that Texas State had three teams earn the honor in the same year.

The Bobcats had three of the 15 teams from the Sun Belt Conference teams publicly recognized and joined Arkansas State as one of only two Sun Belt schools to have three teams. Georgia State had two teams, while Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, UT Arlington, Troy, UL Lafayette and UL Monroe each had one team. A total of 290 NCAA Division I schools had at least one team on the APR list.

There were 38 teams from the State of Texas being publicly recognized and Texas State was one of five schools from the Lone Star State to have three teams, and one of eight schools from Texas to have multiple teams publicly recognized. The other schools with three or more teams included Abilene Christian, Houston, Rice and Texas. North Texas, Sam Houston State and UTSA had two teams, while Incarnate Word, TCU, Texas A&M, UT Arlington and UTEP had one team.

A total of 1,071 teams were recognized publicly by the NCAA. Each sport had teams with scores ranging from 983 to a perfect 1000. Texas State’s three teams were among the 944 teams nationwide to earn perfect APR scores.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term to provide a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.

This year’s APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.

All Division I teams’ APR scores will be released April 20. All teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason play and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
