Parmer Lane bridge to close in preparation for diverging diamond interchange opening on Saturday

Staff Reports

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Transportation will open a new diverging diamond interchange (DDI) on the Parmer Lane bridge over I-35 this weekend. To complete the work, the Parmer Lane bridge will close at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8. The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic as a DDI at noon on Saturday, Oct. 9, weather permitting. Police will be onsite throughout the weekend to help direct traffic. While the bridge is closed, traffic will detour to the U-turns at either Howard Lane or Yager Lane.

What to consider when driving through a DDI:

  • Follow the signs and stay in the lines.
  • For motorists wanting to continue traveling eastbound or westbound on Parmer Lane, traffic will be shifted to the left side of the bridge and then shifted back to the right after exiting the DDI.
  • Motorists turning left onto I-35 will be shifted to the left, cross the bridge and will exit the DDI to the left.
  • Northbound or southbound I-35 frontage road traffic will utilize the newly constructed bypass lanes, allowing motorists to bypass the Parmer Lane interchange completely.
  • Frontage road traffic that does not use the bypass lane will be required to turn left or right at Parmer Lane, as there will be no through access at the interchange.

Watch the DDI explanatory video to see how it works. You can also read the DDI fact sheet to learn more about this innovative intersection design.

Road signs have been placed to alert drivers of the upcoming closures. TxDOT asks the traveling public to be patient and remain aware when traveling through the work zone. To learn more about this project, visit My35Construction.org.
