UPDATED 1:56 PM: San Marcos Police Arrest Suspect In Burglary Of A Vehicle After High Speed Chase

A San Antonio man is in Hays County Jail after leading San Marcos Police Officers on a high-speed chase down IH-35.

George Alvarado (02/05/1987) was arrested and charged with evading arrest with a vehicle, evading arrest detention, burglary of a vehicle, driving with license invalid with previous convictions and accident involving damage to vehicle.

On Saturday, June 1, at approximately 6:46 PM, San Marcos Police Officers were dispatched to the Premium Outlets for a burglary of a vehicle.

A witness described the suspect and vehicle to officers who then saw it leaving the outlets and attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and continued onto N. IH-35 at high speed.

Officers followed the vehicle which exited the highway at exit 205 and began traveling east on Highway 80. In an attempt to run a red light at the intersection of Bugg Lane and Highway 80, Alvarado struck another car. Neither occupant in the second vehicle was injured, and their vehicle sustained only minor damage.

The impact caused the vehicle to spin out of control and flip onto its side. Alvarado then exited the vehicle and attempted to run on foot before being tasered by officers. During this incident, the suspect tried to take away one of the officers’ tasers.

*SMPD released a clarification stating that the vehicle in which Alvarado fled in was NOT stolen as the city’s original release stated. SMPD and City of San Marcos apologizes for the confusion.*

Upon an investigation, Alvarado was found to be in possession of approximately $1,000 of stolen property acquired during the vehicle burglaries.

Alvarado remains in the Hays County Jail on bonds totaling $27,000.
