San Marcos City Council has two seats up for election

UPDATE: This post has been updated to remove William McCann, who dropped out of the race for City Council Place 6.

The San Marcos City Council has two council seats up for election in the Nov. 2, 2021, special election. August 16, 2021, was the last day to file as a candidate for San Marcos City Council Place 5 and Place 6. The ballot order was drawn on August 20, 2021. 

San Marcos City Council, Place 5 has Incumbent Mark Gleason squaring off with Planning and Zoning Commissioner Zachariah Sambrano. 

Councilmember Melissa Derrick is not seeking reelection for City Council, Place 6. Place 6 has two candidates in the race including former City Council member Jude Prather, who served on the San Marcos City Council from 2010 – 2016 and Mark Rockeymoore who served in City Council from 2018 – 2020.

According to the City of San Marcos Elections page, key dates include:

• October 4 – Last Day to Register to Vote (https://www.votetexas.gov/register/index.html) or (https://hayscountytx.com/departments/elections/resources/voter-registration-and-ballot-by-mail/)
• October 18 – First Day of Early Voting by Personal Appearance
• October 22 – Last Day to Apply for Ballot by Mail (Received, not Postmarked)
• October 29 – Last Day of Early Voting by Personal Appearance
• November 2 – Election Day
