Letter To The Editor: Cape's Dam Historical Landmark Designation

The San Marcos City Council is slated to receive an update and hold a discussion regarding Capes Dam, the Mill Race, Thompson’s Island, San Marcos River and the Visioning Study Tuesday during their work session.
City Council will provide direction to the city manager about proceeding with an agreement with Hays County to partner on renovation/rehabilitation of Capes Dam and whether they want to explore the larger master plan concept with the county.
On January 15, 2019, the city council held an executive session to discuss possible partnership opportunities with Hays County and the Hays County Historical Commission.
The council postponed the decision for up to six months on whether to designate Capes Dam as a historic landmark on January 29.
Councilmember Ed Mihalkanin requested city staff bring them all the information related to the project including estimates for repairs and demolition before the council made its decision.
Hays County and the Hays County Historical Commission’s conceptual proposal provides ideas for not only repairing the dam but improving accessibility and parkland around the structure.
The city council will convene for their work session at 3:00 PM in the San Marcos City Council Chambers at City Hall.
In other news, the Council will hold an executive session to receive advice from legal counsel regarding the Kinder Morgan Pipeline and consider an economic development incentive agreement for Katerra.

Capes Dam has stood watch over the community for over 150 years. Today, it provides water flow into the Mill Race that is a 1/3 of a mile stretch of a river and ends with a waterfall that has become a local hot spot for swimming. The waterfall, known has Thompson’s Dam, is what powered the gin in 1867.
