San Marcos Library: Astronomy And The VJ Day Times Square Kiss

Dr. Donald Olson of Texas State University will share his team’s latest research during a lively lecture at the San Marcos Public Library on Saturday, July 25 at 2:00 p.m.

“The tall buildings of Manhattan cast shadows that can be used, just like the shadow on a sundial, to determine the time of day. Our astronomical analysis of sunlight and shadows allows us to determine a precise time for the iconic VJ Day Times Square Kiss photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt — with interesting consequences for the scenario involving the sailor and the woman in white,” says Dr. Olson.

Texas State physics faculty members Donald Olson and Russell Doescher, along with Iowa State University astrophysicist Steven D. Kawaler, published their findings in the August 2015 edition of Sky & Telescope, available at the library now.

Dr. Olson’s charismatic demonstration of his Celestial Sleuthing methodology is entertaining, surprising, and not to be missed!

The San Marcos Public Library is located at 625 E. Hopkins St. For further information please contact the library at 512-393-8200.
