San Marcos Library Upcoming Events

The San Marcos Public Library has announced their schedule of events during spring break for all ages. 

The Library has access to a collection of library materials; entertaining and educational programs for all ages; fast, free computer, Internet, and information services; and comfortable facilities in which to read, relax, and connect with others.

Mondays & Saturdays

• AARP Tax Aid

Mondays, 3 PM to 6 PM.

• Registration begins at 1:30 PM.

Saturdays, 10 AM to 1 PM.

• Registration begins at 8:30 AM.

Free Walk-In Service through April 15. Trained volunteers from AARP prepare individual tax returns for free at the library. No appointment is necessary; first come, first served. Only the first 40 people will be assisted each day. Bring all tax-related documents, including last year’s tax return, social security cards for all dependents, and a photo ID.

Monday, April 1 Thru April 30

• National Poetry Month 4th Annual Haiku Poetry Contest 

April 1st through 30th

You can be a published poet! In celebration of National Poetry Month, children and adults are welcome to participate in a community-wide haiku poetry contest. Look for entry boxes around town or bring your submission to the library. Contestants may enter up to three poems.

There will be two winners — one child (12 and under) and one teen/adult (13 years old to 113 years old). Additionally, this year, library patrons will be able to “check-out” haiku boxes from the library! Winners will receive the title 2019 San Marcos Haiku Laureate, and their work and story will be published in the San Marcos Daily Record!

Thursday, April 4

• Children’s Program: Fired Up About Reading

San Marcos firefighters visit the library with hot stories and cool trucks!

• Children’s Program: Lego Mania 

4:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Grab a bowl of LEGOs and a base plate and build your dream creation. Ages 4 and up.

• Demystifying Medical Careers 

6:00 PM to 7:30 PM

This series features panel discussions with area physicians, mentorship, as well as access to college and medical school repre­sentatives. On April 4, we will have health professionals Dr. Anne Alaniz, D.O and Dr. Kelvin Simmons, DDS as guest speakers.

• Chess Night 

6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

All ages and skill levels are welcome. The library provides chess sets, clocks, and basic instruction.

Friday, April 5

• Yarn in the Community 

10:30 AM to 12:30 PM

The library invites all fiber folks to enjoy sewing, knitting, or crocheting in good company. Bring your own materials and anything you are currently working on.

Saturday, April 6

• Get the Job you Want: Market Yourself

2:00 PM to 3:30 PM

The key to getting any job is knowing how to market yourself and your abilities. This workshop will help you learn how to do that by providing useful tips for constructing a stellar brand throughout your job search, from beginning to end. We will discuss everything from cover letters to resumes, and utilizing LinkedIn. Feel free to bring any documents you are currently working on. Presented by Krystal Saenz.

Sunday, April 7

• Herbalism Club: Herb Crafting

1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Learn to make fun and useful household items with your herbs, from herbal bath bombs to infused oils, and much more. Feel free to bring favorite books, recipes, seeds or cuttings to swap, or just come ready to learn. Meets the first Sunday of every month – join in anytime!

Topics include: pros and cons of homeownership, credit, mortgage loans, home inspections, down-payment assistance programs, how to purchase a home, and protecting your investment. Presented by staff of A+ Federal Credit Union.
