Growth Rate for the Hays County City Stays Strong Since Last Year According to the US Census Bureau
The nation’s eyes are once again on San Marcos, Texas as the U.S. Census Bureau today released data naming it the fastest growing city in the country with over 50,000 population. The city’s population climbed 7.9 percent between June 2013 and June 2014 reaching 58,892. This is the third year in a row that San Marcos receives this recognition as it was named the fastest growing city in 2013 with a population increase of 4.9 percent and then again in 2014 with a population increase of 8 percent.
“San Marcos is the center of gravity for the Austin-San Antonio corridor,” said City of San Marcos Mayor Daniel Guerrero. “In order to sustain this growth with respect to our natural environment and citizens, we must continue to invest in our water resources, infrastructure and all areas that touch our community. I’m proud of how far the city of San Marcos, Texas State University, the Greater San Marcos Partnership and all of the diverse stakeholders in San Marcos have come in diversifying our economy.”
Mayor Guerrero sits on the Greater San Marcos Partnership Board of Directors representing the City of San Marcos.
“This continues to be an exciting time for the city of San Marcos,” said Adriana Cruz, President, Greater San Marcos Partnership. “Our geographic location, natural beauty, the presence of Texas State University coupled with an affordable quality of life makes the City of San Marcos an attractive place for people to relocate. The corridor between Austin and San Antonio is the most dynamic in the country and continues to exceed expectations. We applaud the City of San Marcos and Hays County for their efforts to ensure that San Marcos continues to be a great place to live, work and play.”
The U.S Census Bureau data was released the same day as the 2015 Greater San Marcos Economic Outlook, hosted by the Greater San Marcos Partnership, Texas State University’s McCoy College of Business, and the City of San Marcos. The event looks at the future of the Greater San Marcos regional economy with nationally recognized economist Dr. Ray Perryman delivering the keynote address, as well as a panel made up of firms who have made significant investments in the region.
“I am not at all surprised that San Marcos is once again the nation’s growth leader in population,” said Dr. Perryman. “It is located in a major growth corridor, offers accessibility and very attractive residential options in terms of both cost and quality of life, and is growing its internal economic capacity with innovative economic development initiatives. The area also features an outstanding university (Texas State University) that is rapidly expanding educational opportunities, and research capabilities, as well as a strong leadership team with an enlightened growth strategy. I anticipate that the area will continue to perform well in the years to come.”
In 2014, the Greater San Marcos Partnership undertook an 8-month long process to update their regional economic development strategy in order to meet the needs of the rapidly growing region. The new five-year plan focuses economic development efforts on target industry sectors, which will generate the highest value for the region.
