SAN MARCOS — The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter (SMRAS) is overcapacity, and is asking local residents to help create space by fostering and adopting.
According to SMRAS, since March 1, 2022, the shelter has taken in a total of 820 animals and are currently short of 30 kennels for their dogs.
“We have way too many dogs in pop-up kennels around the shelter and we need help. With animals still incoming into our shelter we will be forced to make some very difficult decision next week,” Sydney Bonnin, Animal Services Program Coordinator said in an email.
SMRAS is currently the only animal shelter for Hays County, and also reached maximum capacity last month. According to their March 2022 Statistics Report, they have had 929 live intakes since the beginning of this year.
“We are in a desperate situation and we are seeking help from our community,” said Bonnin.
Most adoptions include a $97 fee, and adopters must show a valid I.D. and be 18 or older. Being a resident of Hays County is not required. All adoptable animals have had a medical examination, updated vaccinations, microchips and been spayed or neutered.
“The only way we can get through tough times like this is if we do so together,” said Bonnin.
The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter provided a list of 11 dogs who are in dire need of fostering.

She has been at the shelter for 93 days with no adoption interest. She completed her heartworm treatment last week and she gets along great with her sister Shiori. She is potty trained, good with other dogs, would love to go with her sister if possible.

He needs someone with a yard or someone who can take him on walks daily to get his energy out. He has been stressed out at the shelter and would benefit from being the only pet in the home.
Enzo, 1-year-old (49109575)
Enzo has been at the shelter 58 days and is a return. He does really well with other dogs his size and needs some basic training (he likes to hug everyone). He was surrendered because they could not give him the time he needed. He was great with their other dog, great with their kids, and loves the car.

Blizzard, 1-year-old (49381695)
Blizzard has been at the shelter for 109 days. He was originally in a foster to adopt home throughout his heartworm treatment but, due to unforeseen circumstance, that fell through. He gets along with other dogs, is crate trained, and still needs to take it easy after his HW treatment.
Bojangles, 8-years-old (49279005)
Bojangles has been at the shelter for 130 days with no adoption interest.
He has done really well on his Dog Day Out adventures, he is the more dominate personality when it comes to dogs, and loves treats. He is potty trained and would do well in a home with a yard or someone who takes him on daily walks.
Aristotle, 2-years-old (49490180)
Aristotle has been at the shelter for 90 days without any adoption interest. He does well with other medium energy dogs like himself, loves going for walks, and needs some basic training. He would benefit from a home that has a yard or someone who is dedicated to taking him on walks daily to get his energy out.
Bosco, 2-years-old (4599966)
Bosco has been at our shelter for 71 days with no adoption interest. He would greatly benefit from someone who works with his training and builds his confidence. He would do best in a home with a yard or with someone who will take him on walks daily to get his energy out.
Vivian, 10-years-old (49683522)
Vivian has been at the shelter for 57 days with little adoption interest. Her adoption fee has been sponsored and she does well with other dogs. She came to us with a bad eye infection and we removed her eye. She has been in a pop-up crate or behind the adoption counter for the majority of her stay with us and would really benefit going into home where she can complete her HW treatment. She is a couch potato, crate trained, and potty trained.
Scooby, 2-years-old (49027985)
Scooby has been a the shelter for 172 days without any adoption interest. He is potty trained, loves squeaky toys, and loves splashing in the kiddie pool. This guy would need a yard and a quiet home with no other animals where he can decompress. He is not aggressive with other dogs, but does no seem socialized with other animals.
Those interested in adopting or would like more information call the shelter during open hours at 512-805-2657 or email animaladoptions@sanmarcostx.gov. More information on animals available for adoption can be found on their website.
